NMSHMM's Year Ends with a Bang!
Paul Karas, CPG, CHMM
Camp Dresser & McKee, Inc. (CDM)

Although the NMSHMM new year doesn't begin until April 1, things are already heating up! There's a lot planned for the last two months of the current year. Several of these plans and initiatives are discussed in this month's newsletter.

NMSHMM Elections - By the time you receive this newsletter, the election will have been decided. Thanks again to the enthusiastic candidates who have agreed to run for officer positions! The election results will be published in the March Newsletter, and the new officers will be installed at the:

Annual NMSHMM Dinner - This year's Spring Gala will be held on Friday, March 10 at Garduño's on the Green. Our keynote speaker will be Philip Newman, the new Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Director for Sandia National Laboratories. We look forward to hearing his views on Sandia's ES&H priorities and what this means for the community. The dinner is always a good opportunity to meet and socialize with your peers and hear about NMSHMM's accomplishments and plans for the new year. More information on the Annual Dinner will be provided in February via email, including an opportunity to select a dinner entrée and RSVP electronically.

Logo Contest - The contest for a new NMSHMM logo continues. We're hoping to add some more color and splash to the traditional Roadrunner seal. Got an idea? The deadline for submissions has been extended to 3:00 PM, February 13. Get your ideas into .

Science and Engineering Fairs - NMSHMM has been participating in two major fairs for several years; Northwest New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair (March 16-18) and the National American Indian Science and Engineering Fair (March 23-25). Linda McCormick will again be coordinating our involvement to include judges for both events and prizes for noteworthy entries. Please email Linda McCormick through  or visit the web sites (http://www.unm.edu/~scifair/ or http://www.aises.org/events/naisef/NAISEF_Newsletter_2006.pdf) for more information.

Carlsbad National Overview Course - NMSHMM is assisting the Center of Excellence for Hazardous Materials Management (CEHMM) with an offering of the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers (ACHMM) National Overview Course (NOC), March 13-17, 2006, in Carlsbad, New Mexico. For more information, point your browser to www.cehmm.org.

Whew! And this is just a sampling of what's going on in your hazardous material management professional society! I look forward to seeing many of our members, spouses and other colleagues at the Annual Dinner. Please plan to attend; the Board is interested in hearing your ideas!

It is Membership Renewal Time
As the new calendar year gets underway, several NMSHMM members have sent in membership renewals via the NMSHMM website. Remember, you can renew your membership any time - you don't have to wait until the start of our fiscal year (April through March). If you renew now, your membership is good through March of 2007!!! If you are a CHMM, you should have received a combined dues statement from ACHMM by now. This convenient statement lets you join or renew your National Chapter membership ($85) and also pay your NMSHMM dues ($30) at one time. At the end of each month ACHMM sends us a list of renewals and a check for our local dues. You may have to get out your bifocals to find us on the list of chapters on the ACHMM dues statement, but I've checked and we are there - listed under New Mexico.

If you are confused by the new combined dues statement or want to verify your local chapter membership status, don't hesitate to send me an email (). We look forward to your continued support of our local chapter and hope to see you soon at a board meeting, lunch meeting, and annual dinner.
