NMSHMM Supports our CHMMunity
Brian Salem, CHMM
New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) Hazardous Waste Bureau
NMSHMM is continuing to pursue CHMMunity efforts to actively educate and prepare the community to respond to environmental issues. NMSHMM has agreed to donate $1,000 to the Albuquerque Citizen Corps Council (CCC), which puts on the Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) class. NMSHMM is requesting matching funds from ACHMM. Our donation will sponsor the next CERT class starting in August or September. Check the City of Albuquerque web site for a link to the CCC site for information about the class. You can also contact Brian Fields with City of Albuquerque Emergency Planning at 833-7293. We have awarded four scholarships to winners of the March science fairs. Two of the winners are from Albuquerque, and we will ask them to present at one of our lunch meetings.
Our last lunch presentation covered the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster recovery operation. The presentation was by Richie Spangler who participated in the operation. It was the largest environmental response to that date and was personally rewarding to Richie to help out.
NMSHMM is working to develop, maintain and promote Strategic Partnerships and Alliances that support the CHMM Certification. At our last Board meeting, the acceptance of the ACHMM National Overview Class (NOC) by the Department of Energy was discussed. NMSHMM will be reaching out to Sandia National Labs to put on a class for their environmental and safety staff. This may generate some new members as well as encourage old members to get more involved.
The NMSHMM annual budget and was presented and approved at the recent Board meeting. Most of our income results from the NOCs. Additional classes will give us more opportunities to participate in additional community projects. In an effort to improve our member's health and fitness, it has been suggested that we send out email notifying members of opportunities to participate in races in Albuquerque as a member of a NMSHMM team. Look for an e-mail announcement for the first race soon.
Lastly NMSHMM is always looking for good locations for a field trip. We are exploring opportunities to take field trips to the Eclipse Aviation facility and INTEL. If you know of any other places that would make an interesting trip, please contact a NSMHMM Board member or myself, and we will be glad to schedule it.

Committee News:
Membership
Kelly Bowles, CHMM
Committee Chair
Welcome to a new NMSHMM year. The Board of Directors has a busy year planned and we look forward to seeing you at Board meetings, lunch meetings, field trips and social events. NMSHMM is pleased to report that as of March 31, 2006 our active member total is 51, including several honorary memberships. However, our database indicates that a whopping 36 people who were dues paying members in the 2005-2006 NMSHMM year have not paid dues for the current (2006-2007) year. Are you one of them? If you were a dues-paying member for the 2005-2006 NMSHMM year, you should have received your membership certificate with your last newsletter. If you haven't paid your dues for the current year, you should also have received a kind reminder to renew. You can renew your membership using the reminder card you received or by accessing the on-line membership form in the membership section of the website and reap the rewards of NMSHMM membership for another year! Plus, if you haven't already received one, there's a special NMSHMM T-shirt waiting for you.

NMSHMM Rewards Young Scientists and Engineers
Paul Karas, CHMM, CPG, NMSHMM Past President
Each spring aspiring grade school scientists and engineers enter their research projects in fairs across the country. NMSHMM supports and participates in two such fairs held in Albuquerque: the Northwest New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair (NWNMRSEF) and the National American Indian Science and Engineering Fair (NAISEF). In March, NMSHMM judges, led by Linda McCormick, CHMM, selected a junior award winner and senior award winner at each of these events. The selected projects are as follows:
Northwest New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair:
Junior Category Award ($100) - Alexander Caldwell, Our Lady of Fatima, Albuquerque, NM, "Bacterial Growth in Plastic Water Bottles"
Senior Category Award ($150) - Kristen Henricksen, Rio Rancho High School, Rio Rancho, NM, "Will Phyto-Estrogens Affect the Development of Frogs?"
National American Indian Science and Engineering Fair:
Junior Category Award ($100) - Kevin Long, St. Bonaventure School, Thoreau, NM, "Trash to Treasure"
Senior Category Award ($150) - Austin LaFromboise, Turtle Mountain High School, Belcourt, ND, "Producing Alternative Energy from Sugar Beet Processing Water"
Congratulations to our winners on their original and well presented projects! You have demonstrated an enthusiasm and curiosity in the world around you that will serve you well in your school career and in life! We extend an offer to you to attend a NMSHMM luncheon and present your project to our NMSHMM members.
Race for the Cure
Sandra Martin, CHMM, NMED Hazardous Waste Bureau
I really want to get the word out about the Race for the Cure for the Susan G. Korman Breast Cancer Foundation. This event is a 5-kilometer (5-K) fitness run/walk. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised go to the Korman Foundation Award and Research Grant Program. The other 75% stays in the local community to fund breast education, breast cancer screening and treatment projects. If anyone is interested in forming a 5-K walking team on June 11th at 7:00 AM, please contact me at . Participation in the race is open to current/past members, spouses, and children. Past races are mostly comprised of women, teenagers and children. Cost is approximately $12-$15, which covers the t-shirt and entrance. This is the group-discounted rate. Additional dollars can be raised but is not required. Immediately following the race, a reception area will be held with local and national sponsors information and giveaways. If there is interest, we can carry a NMSHMM banner or a banner listing the names of NMSHMM family members near and far who are survivors of breast cancer.
