NMSHMM Applying to Host ACHMM Leadership Workshop
Brian Salem, CHMM
New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) Hazardous Waste Bureau

Summer is here, and the rains have returned. In many parts of the state, the fire danger has been replaced by flood danger, occurring overnight or within hours some places. Many models are suggesting that this winter should be a good one. Get your snow equipment ready.

The NMSHMM Board is submitting a proposal to sponsor the next Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers (ACHMM) Leadership Workshop in April 2007 here in Albuquerque. The bid package is due on August 25. Our first planning meeting was July 26. A second meeting will be on August 15 at our monthly NSMHMM Board meeting if you're interested. The board is soliciting bids for the meeting location, lining up a few sponsors and locating a speaker or two for the workshop. This will increase our chapter's profile with ACHMM and provide some quality training for our membership. More information will follow as we finalize the plans.

Our July lunch presentation by Jerry Kamieniecky of Gordon Environmental on Arid Landfill Design Innovations was very interesting and well attended. One of the building supply shortfalls here in New Mexico for these innovative landfill designs has been sand. Most sand here has too much fine grade material with it. Gordon Environmental solved the problem by crushing rock excavated for the landfill on site to the proper grade.

As the September 5 deadline for using the new hazardous waste manifests approaches, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved a number of companies to print and supply the new forms. More information and a list of companies printing the forms can be found at the EPA website at www.epa.gov/epaoswer/hazwaste.

For those of you in the lead abatement field or owners of houses built before 1978, the EPA has proposed a new regulation that would require training and certification of contractors performing remodels and prescribe an array of lead-safe work practices in houses with children younger than six years of age. This would apply to about half of the houses in the country.

Lastly a field trip to the Eclipse Aviation facility is scheduled for our lunch meeting on October 18. The field trip will take about three hours and will include stops at the innovative friction weld and paint shop areas. This will be an excellent opportunity for members to check out a new and exciting industry here in Albuquerque. If you know of any other places that would make an interesting trip please contact the Board or me and we will be glad to schedule it.

August Speaker

Regulatory Changes for the Automotive Recycling Industry

Our luncheon speaker for August 16 is Bill Proffer. He is currently the Regional Director for Region 8 of the Automotive Recyclers Association. He has also been a board member and officer in the New Mexico Automotive Recyclers Association since 1985. He is the president of his family-owned business, Albuquerque Foreign Auto Parts, Inc. located on Broadway SE in the Albuquerque south valley.

The automotive recycling industry in New Mexico is seeing some major regulatory changes. In particular, each business in the industry will be inspected by the NMED for compliance with its various regulations. Mr. Proffer will be talking about the relationship between the industry and the regulators, the industry and the association, and ways the association and regulators can work together to minimize threats to the environment, improve neighborhood perceptions and assist the economic well being of our communities.

Please join us at Uptown Sports Bar and Grill for this informative program.
