NEW MEXICO RECYCLING CONFERENCE
It's almost time for the New Mexico Recycling Conference as the dates of June 8-10 approach.
Recycle! New Mexico: The Road Ahead 2004 features A-Z Recycling Issues, Composting & Organics, Electronics Recycling, Green Building, Policy Development for Sustainable Recycling and Effective Tools for Waste Management Professionals.
You don't want to miss this conference as it is the only gathering of its kind with more than 150 recycling, solid waste, composting & green building professionals leading general and breakout sessions, great tours to sites where you will see examples of recycling and composting in action, and an incredible opportunity to network with peers. HOMELAND SECURITY CONFERENCE AT ISLETA PUEBLO
Sign up now for the “Homeland Security: Combating Terrorism” conference at
Isleta Pueblo on October 27-31, 2003. The conference will honor the role of
public service personnel in protecting the public from events such as 9/11 and
will help participants gain an understanding of New Mexico’s activities to build
the public health infrastructure and emergency response capacity. The goal of
these activities is to improve the response to terrorism and infectious disease
outbreaks and enhance the interrelationships of the state’s various emergency
response agencies. Sandia National Laboratories, ASIS International, the U.S.
Department of Justice, New Mexico Tech, and the New Mexico Department of Health
teamed up with national, state, county, and local police, fire, and emergency
agencies to organize “Tribute to American Heroes Week” which includes this
conference. Additional sponsors include the Local Emergency Planning Committee,
the New Mexico National Guard, Southwest Cyberport, and Integrated Controls. The
conference will feature national guest speakers, dignitaries, and entertainment.
Participants can receive continuing education units (CEUs) from New Mexico Tech
or from the New Mexico EMS Bureau, a certificate by the New Mexico Law
Enforcement Academy for in-service training requirements, HAZMAT
re-certification, and four ASIS CPP re-certification points.
The conference fee is $250 per person (before September 15) or $275 per person (after September 15 and on the day of the conference). NEW MEXICO ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH CONFERENCE IS NEXT MONTH
The seventh annual New Mexico Environmental Health Conference will be held October 20-22, 2003, at the historic Sheraton Old Town Hotel in Albuquerque. NMEHC-2003 is co-sponsored by the Bernalillo County Environmental Health Department and WERC. Additional sponsors include the New Mexico Environmental Health Association, the City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department, the New Mexico Environment Department, and your own New Mexico Society for Hazardous Materials Managers (NMSHMM).
NMEHC-2003 is organized around five concurrent tracks of educational sessions:
Keynote speakers are: Dr. Floyd Horn, Administrator, Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture; Dr. Sarah Allen, Health Sciences Center, University of New Mexico; and Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico. Vice-Admiral Richard H. Carmona, U.S. Surgeon General, has also been invited to speak.
In association with and prior to NMEHC-2003, NMSHMM is offering the Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) Overview Course and Exam October 14-17. See above for more information. National Conference Calls for Exhibitors and Sponsors
Exhibitors and sponsors are needed for the 2003 ACHMM national conference in Dallas. The conference is slated for September 14-17, 2003, at the Fairmont Hotel, and 800 to 1000 environmental professionals from throughout the country are expected to attend. ABSTRACTS DUE FOR NMEHC-2003
The Call for Abstracts has just been sounded for the 2003 New Mexico Environmental Health Conference (NMEHC-2003). Your Society will once again participate as one of the sponsors of the conference, scheduled for the Sheraton Old Town Hotel in Albuquerque on October 20-22, 2003.
Original presentations about new technologies and the latest cutting-edge topics in the environmental and public health fields are encouraged. Presentations may consist of but are not limited to: (1) Community Health Protection: education and outreach, emerging environmental and public health problems, and land use and urban sprawl; (2) Emergency and Disaster Management: anti-terrorism preparedness, emergency response, and environmental security; (3) Environmental Health Innovations: developing technologies, pollution prevention, and remediation techniques; and (4) Special Areas of Environmental Interest: border and Native American issues, energy efficiency and sustainability, and injury prevention and occupational health. Presentations can have a focus on Food Protection and Safety, Indoor and Outdoor Air Quality, Waste Issues (Hazardous, Liquid, Radioactive, and Solid), Water Resources (Ground, Storm, Surface, and Waste), Vector Control, and any other pertinent environmental or public health focus.
All abstracts must be received no later than Monday, April 31, 2003, and each abstract must include (1) full contact information (name, title, organization, address, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail); (2) a brief biography (1 to 2 paragraphs); (3) the title; (4) a description (no more than one page) including the importance of the topic and what participants will learn or receive from the presentation; and (5) any audio-visual equipment needs (NMEHC can furnish all except a laptop).
